Water repellents

Water repellents reduce the absorption of water and dirt on the finished ceramic surface. They mainly protect polished porcelain tiles and unglazed tiles.

Why the surface stains

Some ceramic surfaces have open pores, especially after porcelain tiles are polished or on unglazed tiles. These pores absorb water, oil and dirt, which leave stains that are hard to remove.

The water repellent penetrates these pores and seals them from the inside.

Where water repellents are used

  • Polished porcelain tiles
  • Unglazed ceramic tiles
  • Rectified edges and surfaces
  • Tiles exposed to staining in use

Choosing and checking

The type of water repellent and how it is applied depend on the porosity of the tile and on the point in the line where it goes on. The result is checked with stain tests, which show whether the surface resists everyday dirt such as coffee, oil and wine.

Frequently asked questions

Does the water repellent change the color or gloss?

It should not. The product is chosen precisely to protect without changing the finish.

At what stage is it applied?

Usually at the plant itself, after polishing or rectifying and before packing.
