Adhesives for grits

Adhesives for grits are applied to the tile to hold the decorative granules in place until firing. They ensure an even distribution and prevent material losses on the line.

How the application works

The grit falls dry onto the tile right after the adhesive and has to stay in place while the tile moves along the line and into the kiln.

That is why adhesives for grits are formulated to wet the surface evenly, dry at the right speed, without running or building up.

Where they are used

  • Effects over the whole tile surface
  • Localized effects, with the adhesive applied by screen printing
  • Lines using grits of different sizes

Adhesive and grits from one supplier

Esmaltec supplies both the grits and the adhesive, so the two products can be adjusted together for the desired effect.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if the adhesive dries too fast?

The grit does not stick and falls off on the way to the kiln. If it dries too slowly, the adhesive can run and build up. That is why drying time is matched to the line speed.

Does one adhesive suit every grit?

Not necessarily. Coarser, heavier grits need an adhesive layer with more tack than fine ones.
