Ceramic Glazes

Ceramic glazes are the glassy layer that gives the tile surface its finish, color and resistance. Esmaltec develops glazes to order for floor tiles, wall tiles and porcelain tiles.

How the glaze forms

Applied to the tile, usually over the engobe, the glaze melts during firing and forms a continuous surface that protects the floor or wall tile from wear, stains and cleaning products.

A glaze is made mainly of ceramic frits, combined with raw materials such as kaolin, feldspar and quartz, plus colorants and additives that adjust the application.

Where ceramic glazes are used

  • Glazed ceramic floor tiles
  • Wall tiles
  • Glazed porcelain tiles
  • Decorated tiles and special effects

Finishes

The glaze formulation defines the surface finish. The most common are glossy, satin and matt, plus effects such as relief, texture and selective gloss. Each finish is adjusted to the customer’s body, application technique and firing cycle.

Glazes developed for your process

Esmaltec develops ceramic glazes together with the customer. Our laboratory reproduces the conditions of the production line, and our technical team follows the application at the customer’s plant until the result is stable. This regular follow-up is the basis of the quality of Esmaltec products.

With its own frit and compound plants, the company controls the main raw materials of its glazes, which ensures consistency from batch to batch.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a glaze and an engobe?

The engobe is the intermediate layer, applied to the body, that hides the color of the substrate and improves adhesion. The glaze goes on top and defines the final finish.

Does Esmaltec supply glazes for porcelain tiles?

Yes. Esmaltec develops glazes for glazed porcelain tiles, according to each customer’s process.

Are there glazes for third firing?

Yes. Esmaltec has a dedicated line of third-firing glazes and additives, used for decorations applied after the main firing.
